Waterfall delight
The course of the Krka in the park is interrupted 7 times by natural limestone steps that create a series of rapids and waterfalls. The last one, Skradinski buk, is the longest and most impressive of them all. Here the water cascades down 17 ‘steps’, across a width of 200-400 metres, along a length of 46 metres. A dedicated walking trail gives visitors a privileged view. The lush ecosystem in and around the water teems with life: deep-green vegetation, colourful butterflies, song birds and amphibians.
Monasterial beauty
From the Skradinski buk waterfalls you can take a boat tour to Visovac, a picturesque islet in the Krka that is almost completely occupied by a Franciscan monastery. Although the current building only dates back to the 19th century, the history of the island as a spiritual centre began as early as the 15th century. Further along the river bank stands another, even older, Serbian-orthodox monastery, built in the 14th century on top of a Roman cemetery.
Natural beauty
From the ‘lake’ of Visovac (an expansion of the Krka river), a beautiful 8.5-kilometre walking trail leads along the parking lot to the park entrance. Information signs along the route provide additional insight into the unique geology, flora and fauna around the trail: the region is an important habitat for more than 800 plants and 200 bird species. With a total elevation difference of 176 metres, the walk offers many lovely viewpoints. An unhurried stroll takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours.
